One Community Working Together
After 20 years of supporting people in the local community, which has gone through huge change, the organisation is itself undergoing a change of approach. We are now focused on developing the social capital within the community, helping people to help themselves and each other.
The Scotswood Area Strategy, now trading as Scotswood Centre, is a registered charity and company limited by guarantee run by an elected management committee made up of local people, which has delivered high quality community and youth work for 20 years. Scotswood is a marginalised working class community in the west of the city of Newcastle upon Tyne that continues to face many challenges linked to poverty (financial, social and aspirational). The area is undergoing a massive regeneration programme, with 1,800 new homes being built over the next 15 years.
Scotswood Centre will now be delivering all its support services and engaging activities under the banner of Time Banking, where the community engage collaboratively with each other and with the Centre to develop new activities in a spirit of co-production. This programme is funded by the National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund until 2020, and we look forward to working with many people and building exciting new partnerships as we take a creative approach to problem solving in our own area.
We have established a community Post Office, shop and Café in recent years which are now run as independent Social Enterprises by local people. We run an employment drop-in in conjunction with Newcastle Futures from our IT Hub and local people can access courses such as Food Hygiene, IT skills and Personal Development in our training room.

Scotswood Area Streategy was founded in 1994 to support and reconnect the local community following the west end riots which destroyed property and trust. We have coordinated the spending of millions of pounds over 20 years and in 2015 are trading as the Scotswood Centre, with a mission to bring together all the new communities in the newly rebuilt Scotswood.
